q&a

Frequently Asked Questions About
Learning to Drive

  • What do I need before my first driving lesson?

The only thing you must have is a valid UK provisional driving licence. You should apply for this on GOV.uk before booking. You don't need to have read the Highway Code, you don't need any experience, and you don't need your theory test pass certificate — lessons and theory can run alongside each other. Just bring your provisional licence to your first lesson.

  • Do I need to pass my theory test before I can start lessons?

No. You can start driving lessons at any point after getting your provisional licence, even if you haven't taken your theory test yet. Many of our learners study for their theory test at the same time as taking lessons — the two actually complement each other. You do, however, need a theory test pass certificate before you can book your practical driving test.

  • What happens on my very first driving lesson?

Your first lesson is about getting comfortable — not about covering miles. Your instructor will meet you at your home, go through the car controls with you, and get you moving in a safe, quiet area. By the end of the lesson, most beginners have practised moving off, stopping, and steering on a quiet road. No pressure, no expectations. We start at the pace that feels right for you. Our £29 Tester Lesson is specifically designed for complete beginners with no experience.

  • I'm really nervous about driving. Will that be a problem?

Yes. It is completely normal to feel nervous when you are learning to drive or returning after a break. Your instructor can work at a pace that suits your confidence and give you time to understand and practise each skill.

  • Can I choose a male or female instructor?

Yes. We have both male and female DVSA-approved instructors available across our areas. When you get in touch to book, just let us know your preference and we'll match you accordingly. If your preferred instructor isn't available in your area, we'll be upfront about that rather than book you with someone unsuitable.

  • What is the £29 Tester Lesson?

The £29 Tester Lesson is a genuine one hour driving lesson where you can experience how your instructor teaches before making a bigger commitment. It is available for both manual and automatic lessons, and afterwards you can decide whether you would like to continue with that instructor.

  • Is the £29 Tester Lesson only for complete beginners?

No. The Tester Lesson is available to beginners and learners who already have driving experience. It can also be useful if you are changing instructors, returning to driving lessons or simply want to experience a different teaching approach.

  • What if I don't feel my instructor is right for me?

You do not have to continue with an instructor if their teaching style does not suit you. Where another suitable instructor is available, you can try a £29 Tester Lesson with them instead. You can have one Tester Lesson with each instructor.

  • Do you offer both manual and automatic driving lessons?

Yes. Smart Driving School offers both manual and automatic driving lessons across South and South West London. Availability can vary depending on your area, so contact us with your postcode and preferred transmission and we can check for you.

  • How much do driving lessons cost?

Our £29 Tester Lesson is one hour, while regular Single Driving Lessons cost £40 per hour with a minimum two hour booking. Refresher Lessons cost £45 per hour with a minimum two continuous hours, and our 10 hour Intensive Driving Course costs £380.

  • Should I learn in an automatic or a manual car?

It depends on what you prefer and what you plan to drive after passing. Automatic cars remove the need to manage gears and a clutch, while learning manual gives you experience with both. If you pass your test in a manual car, you can drive manual and automatic cars, while an automatic licence is limited to automatic vehicles.

  • How many driving lessons will I need before I'm ready to test?

The DVSA guidance is around 45 hours of professional tuition on average. In practice, most Smart Driving School beginners are ready in 30–50 hours, depending on how frequently they take lessons, whether they practise privately in between, and their natural pace of learning. Taking lessons more frequently — especially in the early stages — means you retain more between sessions and tend to progress faster. We'll give you an honest assessment after a few lessons rather than promise an unrealistic number.

  • How often should I take lessons?

For beginners, we recommend at least once a week — twice a week in the early stages is even better. The more time that passes between lessons, the more you have to recap before you can move forward. Learners who take lessons twice a week in the first month typically progress significantly faster than those who leave gaps of two weeks or more. We'll work around your schedule as much as possible.

  • Can I bring a friend or family member to observe my lesson?

As a general rule, no — lessons are a one-to-one environment between you and your instructor. Having a third person in the car can distract both the learner and the instructor and affects how you learn. If there's a specific reason you'd like someone present for the very first session, speak to us when you book and we can discuss it.

  • Can I practise driving between lessons with a family member?

Yes, and we actively encourage it. Private practice between lessons helps you consolidate what you've learned and build confidence faster. The supervising driver must be over 21, have held a full UK driving licence for at least three years, and you must be insured to drive their car — standard car insurance doesn't automatically cover a learner driver, so check the policy or get learner driver insurance.

  • Do you offer intensive driving courses?

Yes. Our 10 hour Intensive Driving Course costs £380 and is available in manual and automatic. It is mainly designed for learners who already have some driving experience and want to complete several hours of focused training over a shorter period.

  • How do I know if an intensive driving course is right for me?

If you are unsure, an Intensive Driving Assessment can help establish your current driving level before choosing a course. Your driving can be assessed to identify what you already do well, what still needs work and how much further training may be suitable.

  • Do I need to pass my theory test before booking a practical test?

Yes. You cannot book a practical driving test without a theory test pass certificate. The certificate includes a pass number that's required during the booking process. Theory and driving lessons can run in parallel — many learners study for theory while taking lessons, which works well.

  • Where is the nearest driving test centre to Morden?

The nearest test centre to our home base is Morden Driving Test Centre at 10 Tudor Drive, Morden, SM4 4PE. Our instructors know the test routes from this centre extremely well and will incorporate local roads, junctions, and roundabouts from common test routes into your lessons as you get closer to test-ready. We also operate near Sutton, Wimbledon, and other nearby test centres depending on where you're based.

  • How many minors are you allowed in the driving test?

You're allowed up to 15 minor (driving fault) marks and still pass — but only if you receive zero serious or dangerous faults. A serious fault on any part of the test is an automatic fail. One common misconception is that minors "add up" to a serious — this isn't the case, but accumulating several minors in the same area of driving can lead an examiner to mark a serious fault for that behaviour overall.

  • What is Pass Plus and do I need it?

Pass Plus is an optional course you take after passing your driving test. It's not compulsory, but it's highly recommended — especially for new drivers who passed in an automatic or have limited experience on motorways, at night, or in adverse weather. Some car insurers offer a discount to drivers who have completed Pass Plus. We offer Pass Plus at £240 with one of our qualified instructors.

  • Are there any hidden fees I should know about?

No. The price we quote is the price you pay. We don't charge extra for pick-up, fuel, or use of the car on your test day if you book our practical test package. Our driving lesson prices page lists everything in full.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule a lesson without charge. Cancellations with less than 48 hours notice may be charged in full, as your instructor will have reserved that time specifically for you. Life happens — if there's an emergency, speak to us directly and we'll always try to be reasonable.

  • How do I book a lesson?

The easiest ways to book are via our contact page, by calling us on 07529 208063, or by WhatsApp. We respond quickly — usually the same day. If you're booking your first lesson, we recommend starting with the £29 Tester Lesson so you can find the right instructor before committing to a full course.
