Can a Learner Driver Drive on the Motorway?
Yes. Learner drivers can drive on motorways in England, Scotland and Wales, but only under specific conditions. They must be accompanied by a DVSA-approved driving instructor and drive a car fitted with dual controls.
A learner cannot practise on a motorway with a parent, friend or another supervising driver. Even when the legal conditions are met, the instructor must decide that the learner has enough control, awareness and experience to drive safely in motorway traffic.
Motorway training is voluntary and is not automatically included in every ordinary driving lesson. It should be planned with the instructor and only introduced when the learner is ready and the traffic, weather and route are suitable.

Joining and Leaving the Motorway Safely
Joining and leaving a motorway safely depends on early observation, suitable speed and good planning. Your instructor will help you understand what to look for and practise each stage in real traffic without rushing your decisions.
Joining the Motorway
Use the slip road to observe the traffic already travelling on the motorway. Build an appropriate speed where conditions allow, check your mirrors and look for a safe gap. Traffic on the motorway has priority, so you must not assume another driver will move over to let you join.
Merge smoothly into the left-hand lane when it is safe. Avoid stopping unnecessarily at the end of the slip road, as this can make joining more difficult. However, you should never force your way into a gap or cross a solid white line.
After You Have Joined
Once you are on the motorway, settle safely into the left-hand lane. Check your mirrors, maintain an appropriate speed and leave enough space between your car and the vehicle ahead. Give yourself time to become comfortable with the traffic before considering any lane change.
Leaving the Motorway
Read the direction signs early and move into the left-hand lane well before your exit. Signal in good time and enter the exit slip road without cutting across lanes or making a sudden last-minute change.
Adjust your speed after entering the slip road. Slower speeds can feel unusually low after motorway driving, so check your speedometer and prepare for bends, traffic lights or a junction at the end of the exit.

The left-hand lane is the normal driving lane unless you are overtaking or signs and road markings direct you elsewhere. After overtaking, return to the left when there is enough safe space. Remaining unnecessarily in a middle or right-hand lane can obstruct other traffic and create avoidable confusion.
Changing Lanes and Overtaking
Before changing lanes, check your mirrors carefully, assess the speed and position of nearby traffic and take a quick sideways glance towards the blind spot. Signal in good time when it is safe to move. When overtaking, allow enough space before returning to the left so you do not cut in front of the vehicle you have passed.
Signs and Lane Closures
Motorway signs can warn you about congestion, hazards, speed restrictions and closed lanes. Look well ahead and move into an open lane safely when instructed. A red X means the lane is closed and must not be used. Your instructor can help you recognise these signals early and respond without making a rushed lane change.

Motorway conditions can change quickly. Traffic may begin to slow, visibility can reduce or an overhead sign may direct you away from a closed lane. During your lesson, you can learn to notice these changes early and respond without making rushed decisions.
Variable Speed Limits and Overhead Signs
Overhead gantries display speed limits, warnings and information about the lanes ahead. A speed limit shown inside a red circle is compulsory, even when the motorway appears clear. Check the signs regularly and adjust your speed smoothly where necessary.
Looking well ahead gives you more time to understand each instruction. It also helps you avoid sudden braking or a last-minute lane change.
Red X Signs and Lane Closures
A red X means the lane is closed and must not be used. Follow any arrows or advance instructions and move into an open lane when it is safe. Do not wait until the final moment, and do not return to the closed lane until the signs show that it has reopened.
Congestion, Weather and Safe Space
When traffic begins to slow, look ahead, check your mirrors and adjust your speed gradually. Avoid following the vehicle ahead too closely. In dry conditions, leave at least a two-second gap and allow at least twice as much space on wet roads.
Rain, fog and road spray can reduce visibility and make speed or distance harder to judge. Reduce your speed when needed, increase the space ahead and use the correct lights for the conditions. The posted speed limit is a maximum, not a target when conditions make that speed unsafe.
Emergency Areas
Emergency areas are marked by blue signs displaying an orange SOS telephone symbol and may also have orange road surfacing. They must only be used in an emergency.
If you stop in an emergency area, use the emergency telephone and follow the operator’s instructions. Do not attempt to rejoin the motorway until you have spoken to National Highways and have been told how to leave safely.
What If Something Goes Wrong on a Motorway?
A warning light, mechanical problem or unexpected incident can feel frightening at motorway speed. Staying calm and knowing where to move can help you make a safer decision while you arrange assistance.
Leave the Motorway Where Possible
If the vehicle can still be driven safely, try to leave at the next exit or enter a motorway service area. Follow all signs, speed limits and lane instructions while moving away from the main carriageway.
If you cannot leave the motorway, move left into an emergency area, lay-by or onto the hard shoulder where one is available. Stop as far to the left as possible and switch on your hazard warning lights.
Move Away from Traffic When It Is Safe
If you have reached a place of relative safety and can leave the vehicle safely, exit on the side furthest from moving traffic. Move behind a safety barrier where there is one, keep passengers away from the carriageway and do not return to the vehicle to wait.
Do not attempt a roadside repair or place a warning triangle on the motorway. Remain aware of traffic and any other hazards around you.
If You Cannot Leave the Vehicle Safely
If the vehicle stops in a live lane, or it is not safe for you or your passengers to get out, remain inside. Keep your seat belts and hazard warning lights on, then call 999 immediately and ask for the police. You can use the vehicle’s SOS system if it has one.
Getting Help from an Emergency Area
If you stop in an emergency area, use the emergency telephone where provided or call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. You should also contact your breakdown provider.
Do not leave an emergency area and rejoin the motorway until you have spoken to National Highways and received instructions about how to exit safely.
