What Is the Pass Plus Scheme?

The Pass Plus scheme is a practical post-test training course designed to help qualified drivers improve their skills and drive more safely. It can be taken at any time, but it is often most useful for newer drivers during the first year after passing their practical driving test.

Official Pass Plus driving lessons take at least six hours and cover six modules, including town driving, rural roads, night driving, all-weather conditions, dual carriageways and motorways. There is no separate final driving test. Instead, your instructor assesses your driving throughout the course. To complete the Pass Plus scheme successfully, you must reach the required standard in every module. This gives you supervised experience of roads and conditions that may not have been covered fully while you were learning to drive.

Is Pass Plus Worth It?

Pass Plus may be worth it if you have recently passed your driving test but still have limited experience in situations such as motorway, night or higher-speed driving. It gives you supervised time with an instructor while you become familiar with roads and conditions that may not have been covered fully during your normal lessons.

The course can also help if you want broader practical experience before driving regularly on your own. However, Pass Plus is not essential for every new driver. If you already feel comfortable across different roads and conditions, you may not need the full course. Your decision should depend on your experience, confidence and the areas in which you would benefit from further guidance. It is best viewed as an opportunity to develop your skills rather than a guaranteed way to reduce insurance costs.

What Does the Pass Plus Course Cover?
