Frequently Asked Questions About
Learning to Drive

  • How old do I need to be to start driving lessons?

You need to be at least 17 years old to take driving lessons on public roads in the UK. However, you can apply for your provisional driving licence from the age of 15 years and 9 months — so it's worth getting that sorted early. Once you turn 17, you're ready to book your first lesson straight away.

  • What do I need before my first driving lesson?

The only thing you must have is a valid UK provisional driving licence. You should apply for this on GOV.uk before booking. You don't need to have read the Highway Code, you don't need any experience, and you don't need your theory test pass certificate — lessons and theory can run alongside each other. Just bring your provisional licence to your first lesson.

  • Do I need to pass my theory test before I can start lessons?

No. You can start driving lessons at any point after getting your provisional licence, even if you haven't taken your theory test yet. Many of our learners study for their theory test at the same time as taking lessons — the two actually complement each other. You do, however, need a theory test pass certificate before you can book your practical driving test.

  • What happens on my very first driving lesson?

Your first lesson is about getting comfortable — not about covering miles. Your instructor will meet you at your home, go through the car controls with you, and get you moving in a safe, quiet area. By the end of the lesson, most beginners have practised moving off, stopping, and steering on a quiet road. No pressure, no expectations. We start at the pace that feels right for you. Our £10 Tester Lesson is specifically designed for complete beginners with no experience.

  • I'm really nervous about driving. Will that be a problem?

Not at all — it's completely normal, and every instructor at Smart Driving School is experienced working with nervous beginners. We start slowly, on very quiet roads, and your instructor won't push you onto busy roads until you're ready. Nervousness almost always fades within a few lessons once you realise you're in control. If anxiety about driving is something you're worried about, mention it when you book and we'll make sure your instructor knows in advance.

  • Can I choose a male or female instructor?

Yes. We have both male and female DVSA-approved instructors available across our areas. When you get in touch to book, just let us know your preference and we'll match you accordingly. If your preferred instructor isn't available in your area, we'll be upfront about that rather than book you with someone unsuitable.

  • What exactly is the £10 Tester Lesson?

The £10 Tester Lesson is a real, full one-hour driving lesson with a DVSA-approved Smart Driving School instructor — for just £10. It's not a taster session, it's not a consultation, and you're in the car driving from the start. The purpose is to let you experience the instructor's teaching style, personality, and pace before committing to a full course of lessons. If it feels right, you've found your instructor. If it doesn't, we refund your £10 immediately — no questions asked.

  • What does the £10 Tester Lesson actually cover?

It covers exactly what you'd expect from a standard first lesson: getting familiar with the car controls, moving off safely, stopping, basic steering, and getting comfortable behind the wheel. For complete beginners, this happens in a quiet, safe area. If you have some experience already, your instructor will assess your level and adjust accordingly. You drive for the full hour.

  • What happens if I don't like the instructor after the tester lesson?

We refund your £10 in full, instantly, with no awkward questions and no pressure to continue. You can then book another £10 Tester Lesson with a different instructor if you'd like to try again. Our whole model is built on making sure you find the right match — because that's when learners make the fastest progress and actually enjoy the process.

  • Why do you offer this when no other school does?

Because we think the current way driving schools work is broken. Most schools assign you an instructor with no trial, no say, and no refund if it's not working. The average learner spends over £200 with the wrong instructor before switching. We built the £10 Tester Lesson to fix that. It costs us more to run than a standard lesson, but we believe it's the right thing to do — and learners who start with the right instructor progress faster, need fewer lessons overall, and are far more likely to pass first time.

  • Is the £10 Tester Lesson available for both automatic and manual cars?

es. The tester lesson is available in both automatic and manual cars. If you're not yet sure which transmission type is right for you, your instructor can advise you during the session. There's no pressure to commit to one or the other at that point. Find out more about the £10 Tester Lesson here.

  • Should I learn in an automatic or a manual car?

Both are valid choices, and we teach both. If you pass your test in an automatic, your licence will restrict you to automatic vehicles only. If you pass in a manual, you can drive both. Manual lessons are generally slightly harder to begin with — clutch control takes time to master — but the broader licence is a real long-term advantage. Automatic lessons are ideal if you're anxious, in a hurry to pass, or simply don't see yourself driving a manual car in future. Your instructor can help you decide during your tester lesson. See our full breakdown on our driving lesson prices page.

  • How many driving lessons will I need before I'm ready to test?

The DVSA guidance is around 45 hours of professional tuition on average. In practice, most Smart Driving School beginners are ready in 30–50 hours, depending on how frequently they take lessons, whether they practise privately in between, and their natural pace of learning. Taking lessons more frequently — especially in the early stages — means you retain more between sessions and tend to progress faster. We'll give you an honest assessment after a few lessons rather than promise an unrealistic number.

  • How often should I take lessons?

For beginners, we recommend at least once a week — twice a week in the early stages is even better. The more time that passes between lessons, the more you have to recap before you can move forward. Learners who take lessons twice a week in the first month typically progress significantly faster than those who leave gaps of two weeks or more. We'll work around your schedule as much as possible.

  • Can I bring a friend or family member to observe my lesson?

As a general rule, no — lessons are a one-to-one environment between you and your instructor. Having a third person in the car can distract both the learner and the instructor and affects how you learn. If there's a specific reason you'd like someone present for the very first session, speak to us when you book and we can discuss it.

  • Can I practise driving between lessons with a family member?

Yes, and we actively encourage it. Private practice between lessons helps you consolidate what you've learned and build confidence faster. The supervising driver must be over 21, have held a full UK driving licence for at least three years, and you must be insured to drive their car — standard car insurance doesn't automatically cover a learner driver, so check the policy or get learner driver insurance.

  • Do you offer intensive or fast-track driving courses?

Yes. Our Fast Track course gives you 10 hours of lessons for £380 — ideal for learners who want to accelerate their progress. We also offer an Intensive Assessment for those who want a thorough evaluation of their current driving level before booking a test. Speak to us about which approach suits your timeline and experience level.

  • What's the difference between the theory test and the practical driving test?

These are two separate tests. The theory test is a computer-based test taken at a DVSA test centre — it has 50 multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception video section. You must pass both parts to pass the theory test overall. Your theory pass certificate is valid for two years, and you must use it to book your practical test within that window. The practical driving test is the one on the road with an examiner — it lasts about 40 minutes and includes an independent driving section using a sat nav.

  • Do I need to pass my theory test before booking a practical test?

Yes. You cannot book a practical driving test without a theory test pass certificate. The certificate includes a pass number that's required during the booking process. Theory and driving lessons can run in parallel — many learners study for theory while taking lessons, which works well.

  • Where is the nearest driving test centre to Morden?

The nearest test centre to our home base is Morden Driving Test Centre at 10 Tudor Drive, Morden, SM4 4PE. Our instructors know the test routes from this centre extremely well and will incorporate local roads, junctions, and roundabouts from common test routes into your lessons as you get closer to test-ready. We also operate near Sutton, Wimbledon, and other nearby test centres depending on where you're based.

  • How many minors are you allowed in the driving test?

You're allowed up to 15 minor (driving fault) marks and still pass — but only if you receive zero serious or dangerous faults. A serious fault on any part of the test is an automatic fail. One common misconception is that minors "add up" to a serious — this isn't the case, but accumulating several minors in the same area of driving can lead an examiner to mark a serious fault for that behaviour overall.

  • What is Pass Plus and do I need it?

Pass Plus is an optional course you take after passing your driving test. It's not compulsory, but it's highly recommended — especially for new drivers who passed in an automatic or have limited experience on motorways, at night, or in adverse weather. Some car insurers offer a discount to drivers who have completed Pass Plus. We offer Pass Plus at £240 with one of our qualified instructors.

  • How much do driving lessons cost at Smart Driving School?

Our standard lesson rate is £40 per hour on weekdays and £45 per hour on weekends. The £10 Tester Lesson is our introductory offer — a full one-hour lesson for £10 with a money-back guarantee if it's not right. We also offer block packages including our Fast Track (10 hours for £380). See our full pricing page for a complete breakdown of all courses and prices — there are no hidden extras.

  • Are there any hidden fees I should know about?

No. The price we quote is the price you pay. We don't charge extra for pick-up, fuel, or use of the car on your test day if you book our practical test package. Our driving lesson prices page lists everything in full.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule a lesson without charge. Cancellations with less than 48 hours notice may be charged in full, as your instructor will have reserved that time specifically for you. Life happens — if there's an emergency, speak to us directly and we'll always try to be reasonable.

  • How do I book a lesson?

The easiest ways to book are via our contact page, by calling us on 07529 208063, or by WhatsApp. We respond quickly — usually the same day.
